This idle could be further lengthened by extending the period of time the horse is in the resting pose, as horses often can stay idle like that for a longer time
I made Idle Ready pretty static, as I did it with the intention that the horse wouldn't be staying in this animation for too long, but instead it would be cycling between Idle Breaks when idle
Horse locomotion animation set - my first time animating quadrupeds!
During this project, I dived into animating quadrupeds, specifically horses. I created three locomotion animations - walk, trot and canter, as well as idle and two idle breaks, to be able to show off more of the horse's personality.
It was a challenging project, but it felt very rewarding to work on. I learned that four legs are actually quite a lot to animate, but focusing on a leg at a time might make it easier. Horse legs also move completely different than human's, and paying attention to the weight during animation is especially important. Another, and probably the most important, thing is having good references. And ideally, not just one, but multiple for one animation, because it may happen that the reference you have, even though it is a real reference, might not be a good one to actually use as a reference.
